An hour or so drive from San Francisco, Marin County is an expansive area in the northwestern Bay Area. Just north of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, this coastal and forested peninsula in Northern California is comprised of largely rural areas boasting expansive coastal views. The county may be small but is abundant in things to explore, particularly for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re making a day trip from San Francisco or looking for a long weekend getaway, there is a wide range of activities to keep you busy.

1. Hike among redwoods

Marin County is rich in nature and Muir Woods National Monument is home to some of its finest. Walk among might redwood trees in Muir Woods. There are several miles worth of trails to choose from that all offer spectacular views of the old-growth coastal redwoods, which happen to be the tallest living things in the world. Muir Woods is full of different species of flora and fauna, so keep your eyes open for different plants and wildlife when you’re not busy looking up at the sky-high trees. For another stellar hike, head to Mt. Tamalpais State Park. The hike to Tamalpais peak cuts through forests of redwoods with sweeping views over the Bay and can even be a perfect spot for an afternoon picnic.

Marin County is plentiful in beautiful coastlines. This expansive section of the Bay Area is surrounded by beautiful water perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities. Some of the most diverse and abundant coastal areas are in Point Reyes National Seashore, located in West Marin. In Northern California, you’re among some of the best wineries in the country. Sonoma and Napa tend to steal the spotlight when it comes to California wines. However, there’s no need to travel that far with a handful of wineries to try right in Marin County.

Head to Pacecho Ranch Winery for wine steeped in history that dates back to Ignacio Pacheco, who supposedly planted the first grapes in California. Experience the historical richness of the ranch alongside striking landscape and handcrafted wines, especially the Cabernets. While you’re in the area, be sure and treat yourself to meals at a few of Marin’s best restaurants. If you’re looking for the best shellfish in town, head to Saltwater Oyster Depot or check out Sol Food for tantalizing Puerto Rican dishes.
